Alex Pereira has been in the UFC for over two years. He has a record of 7-1, and five of those seven men have held UFC gold. Alex, himself has won titles at the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight levels. Alex is actually on a short list of legends to hold two belts. Everyone knows his history with Adesanya, they stand 1-1 in the UFC and Alex was the first Middleweight to dethrone Izzy. Alex's KO over Sean Strickland aged like a good wine considering Strickland is the only other Middleweight to defeat Adesanya. Alex's Light Heavyweight wins might be more impressive. All three former champs: Jan Blachowicz, Jiri Prochazka, and most recently Jamahal Hill. The knockout on Jamahal the other night at UFC 300 was beautiful. Right before the uppercut, Alex took a kick to the groin and as Herb Dean was about to call time Alex said no because he saw his opening to KO Jamahal. It was absolutely stunning! So all that said, how does Alex's legacy stack up to legends of UFC's past?
In my humble opinion, Alex is the fifth greatest UFC fighter of all time. His 7-1 record is more impressive than Khabib's 13-0. Khabib was a legend, but he only had two impressive wins before his title run and stopped way too early, while Alex has his eyes on the Heavyweight Title and 5/7 of his fights are against former champs. Honestly, I only think DC, Anderson, GSP, and Jon Jones have better resumes than Pereira in his short UFC career. The fact that the fantasy booking of Jon vs Alex is also a potential fight we might see in the near future is crazy to think about. After Alex successfully defended the Light Heavyweight title he broke the curse of the division. There hasn't been a successful title defense in that division since Jon. The belt was a hot potato. It went from Jan, to Glover, to Jiri, to Jamahal, to Alex who finally managed to retain the belt. Alex said after his fight he wants to main event in Brazil next month at UFC 301 and/or wants to fight for the Heavyweight Title. If Poatan manages to win that Heavyweight Title, he'd become the first-ever triple champion in UFC history. I believe Alex can knock out any man in the world, including Jon Jones. Poatan is the definition of a puncher's chance. Even if Alex has to go through Aspinall to get to Jon, I believe he can do it. Regardless, I'm excited for whatever is next for the Light Heavyweight Champion!
If it’s not Poatan vs Ankalaev, it better be Poatan vs Aspinall/Jones.
