For months now the UFC fanbase has been speculating what the main event for UFC 300 will be. The beans have finally been spilled. After UFC 298, Dana White announced that Alex "Poatan" Pereira vs Jamahal "Sweet Dreams" Hill would headline the stacked card. A little over a year ago Jamahal Hill beat Alex's longtime friend and training partner Glover Teixeira to win the Light Heavyweight Championship. There was actually a lot of back-and-forth between the two over social media in the following months. Now, the matchup has finally come to fruition. Jamahal is trying to win back the title he never lost, while Alex is going to try to avenge Glover and finally bring stability to the cursed division which is the Light Heavyweight Division.
As for the magnitude of the card, there are 12 current/former UFC champions on this card. Alex, Jamahal, Zhang Weili, Justin Gaethje (Interim/BMF), Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, Jiri Prochazka, Aljamain Sterling, Deiveson Figueiredo, Cody Garbrandt, Holly Holm, and Jessica Andrade. That is quite literally half the card. Half the card has held the belt. That's kind of unheard of unless you're retrospectively looking at a card that had future champions. The preliminary card itself could literally be a pay-per-view. Not to mention the fact that grizzled vets Bobby Green and Jim Miller are kicking off the show. Jim Miller fought at UFC 100 and UFC 200. That's pretty incredible, we may never see anything like it again.
UFC 300 is definitely highlighting legends and legends in the making, but we also have a few faces of the future featured on this card. First of all, if Yan Xiaonan can beat Zhang Weili then the UFC Strawweight Division is in for another mountain to climb. We also have Bo Nickal vs Cody Brundage. Bo is regarded by many as already a top 5 Middleweight on the planet, yet he's only fought 5 MMA fights. Odds are Bo is going to fall into that future champion category when looking at this card in retrospect adding to the magnitude. Not to mention PFL superstar Kayla Harrison making her debut. Holm vs Harrison is a fantasy matchup for the diehards. Diego Lopes vs Sodiq Yusuff is another one of those fights. Both of these guys have super potential and Diego Lopes is already one of the most entertaining Featherweights in the division and he's only had a handful of fights.
There is a lot to look forward to on this card. UFC 300 is looking like the most massive card in the history of the sport as far as the names go. I know some people are disappointed it doesn't feature Conor, Jon Jones, or Israel Adesanya. However, Conor couldn't logically headline the card with belts underneath and Jones is still injured. As for Adesanya, I think the UFC made the right move electing to go with the right matchup for the division as opposed to the bigger matchup for the card. Alex vs Izzy 3 might do better numbers than Alex vs Jamahal, but at the end of the day Jamahal never lost the belt and other guys in the division don't deserve to be skipped. Plus look at who else the card features and proceed to complain. You can't. Gaethje vs Max for the BMF is awesome, and actually defending the BMF belt makes it mean something. I'm in. Plus any card with Charles Oliveira is a card I wanna watch. Aljo and Figgy on the prelims is the craziest concept to me. These guys were champions within the last year and a half and now they're on the prelims of the largest card in UFC history. I'm glad the UFC is doing the fans justice and giving us the card we deserve. I can't wait and I'm sure neither can you! Which fight are you looking forward to the most?
