Size Does Not Matter...In Jiu-Jitsu?

Not too long ago, Gordon Ryan, the most well-known professional Jiu-Jitsu player in the world grappled with the 2018 and 2019 World's Strongest Men. Thor Bjornsson, famously known for playing "The Mountain" Sir Gregor Clegane in Game of Thrones, won the 2018 World's Strongest Man competition. He is six foot nine and weighs about 335 lbs. Martins Licis the 2019 winner stands at six foot three and weighs roughly about 340 lbs. The two strong men recently wanted to take up jiu-jitsu, so naturally, they went to Gordon Ryan. If you are unaware of who Gordon Ryan is, he holds numerous jiu-jitsu championships across the ADCC, IBJJF, and the Eddie Bravo invitational. In his own words, he is what Conor McGregor is to the UFC for jiu-jitsu. Ryan stands six foot two and walks around at 218 lbs.

At first, Gordon was giving them a training session, but then both of the Strong Men got a little ahead of themselves. They wanted to grapple with the King. Gordon Ryan has been training jiu-jitsu for twelve years, he is a black belt, and now he can say he defeated two of the strongest men on the planet and both have over 100 lbs on him. The video is all over the internet if you want to see the grappling session. It is extremely impressive, it makes you wonder what would Gordon Ryan be able to do in MMA and not just jiu-jitsu. You also have to wonder what this means for people who train sambo, the most superior style of fighting in MMA originating in Russia. Now that we know a guy who is a master of one specific martial art can defeat two guys who have not only size but strength on him. It makes me think that would Khabib would absolutely work someone like The Rock or John Cena just through sambo alone. Regardless of the hypothetical, in my humble opinion, I believe Gordon Ryan has just proven training and experience are far superior to having a size and strength advantage.
